The Conference

Eleven years since she last saw him. Three nights in the same hotel. One wedding ring she kept turning on her finger.

Elena saw his name on the speaker list two weeks before the conference and told herself it didn't matter.

Matteo. Eleven years ago they had spent one summer together in Rome, and then she had left for a job and a life and, eventually, a husband – a kind, steady man named Paul who made her breakfast every Sunday. She hadn't thought about Matteo in years. Mostly.

The first night

He found her at the welcome drinks. Grey at the temples now, the same laugh.

"You look exactly the same," he said.

"That's a lie."

"It is," he admitted. "You look better."

They talked until the bar closed – about work, about Rome, about everything except the ring on her finger, which she kept turning without noticing. At the lift he said goodnight and didn't try anything. She lay awake for a long time, annoyed at how disappointed she was.

The second night

The second night they skipped the conference dinner and walked through the old city in the rain. Under the arches of a closed café he finally said it.

"I never stopped wondering."

"Don't," she said. And then she kissed him.

She would replay the next hours many times: the corridor, the key card that didn't work the first time, her own laugh, nervous and bright. The feeling of being someone she had forgotten she was. What happened in room 512 belongs only to the two of them. She didn't take off the ring. Later, that was the detail that hurt the most.

The third night

On the last evening she sat alone in her room with her phone in her hand. Paul had sent a photo: their dog asleep on her side of the bed. He misses you. So do I.

Matteo knocked at ten. She didn't open the door. She stood with her forehead against it until his footsteps went away.

Home

She told Paul a week later, at the kitchen table, because she couldn't stand the breakfasts anymore. He was silent for a long time. Then he asked the only question that mattered.

"Do you want to stay?"

"Yes."

"Then we'll find out if we can."

It took a year, and a therapist, and a lot of very honest nights. Their marriage is different now – stranger in some ways, more honest in all of them. Sometimes Paul asks her about Vienna. She tells him the truth, and lately he listens to it with an expression she never expected to see.

She still has the conference badge in a drawer. She has never once thrown it away.
